Abstract
Day to day rise in the cost of operating diesel pumps as well as an insufficient and irregular supply of electricity for electric pumps leads the end user to shift from traditional ways of supplying water to solar water pumping systems for irrigation. The paper presents challenges faced by farmers in the tribal belt of Jawhar which were overcome with the implementation of a solar pumping system. The economic and social impact on farming patterns post installation of solar based irrigation system for village Ambyachapada located in Jawhar has been discussed along with the previous and current patterns of land cultivation. Use of similar farming patterns will increase the demand for solar based pumping systems in other tribal regions of India.
