Abstract

The Cosmetics Directive 76/768/EC underwent a revision, and the use of nanomaterials in cosmetic products was high on the agenda of the discussions. The outcome was that regulatory measures specifically focused on nanomaterials used in cosmetic products were included in the resulting legal text (Regulation 1223/2009/EC): (1) Definition of a nanomaterial (2) Product Notification: Indication of presence of nanomaterials (3) Notification of certain products containing nanomaterials (4) Reporting requirements for the Commission (5) Regular review of nanorelated requirements (5) Nanolabelling. This chapter will provide an overview over these requirements and some pointers for their practical implementation.
