Abstract
In today’s modern scenario, the living organisms are constantly exposed to various harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, and radiations. In such conditions, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are emerging as fighting leaders due to their unique antimicrobial property. These nanoparticles are effective against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including several multidrug resistant (MDR) bacteria. Moreover, these nanoparticles exhibit their effect on biofilm-forming bacteria and superbacteria and can be used as a weapon against them. As compared to its solid form, the nanomaterial form of silver, which is having increased surface area, is showing immense applications in healthcare including bacterial infected wound healing, medical devices, burn care, bone injury, dental caries, textile, water treatment, and various other commercial consumer products. These applications will be driving the growth of silver nanoparticles in the coming few years. Here, in this chapter, we will focus on the recent advancement of silver nanoparticles as antimicrobial agent and their applications along with the possible challenges of the AgNPs.
