Abstract

The key species characteristic of homo sapiens is consciousness – conscious awareness of self, others, nature, and the universe. Consciousness and language allowed homo sapiens to create a uniquely human political institution: Democracy. “Campfire democracy” emerged alongside our animal heritage of aggression, domination, and submission.
