Abstract

In this chapter, issues surrounding the ownership of and rights to use land are discussed and the confusion and hardship resulting from the failure to recognise traditional rights especially of indigenous people are highlighted. Ill-defined property rights, exacerbate rural poverty, together with lack of social infrastructure, poor access to markets and denial of access to essential non-timber forest products. Agroforestry systems are advocated for restoring degraded forest-land and improving rural livelihoods.
