Abstract

The complexities of the human body whether demonstrating normal function or pathologic disease are difficult to reproduce in a simulation environment. Creating mimics of the subtle features and patient cues within a manikin, that an experienced clinical care provider expects, is also no simple task. This chapter will provide a broad overview of the role medical simulation plays in healthcare education. It will review aspects of healthcare training, healthcare principles related to anatomical terms, healthcare instruments, tools, medical abbreviations, common medications, and treatments for some of the more commonly encountered diseases. No single chapter could replace clinical experience gained from training in healthcare. However, familiarity with healthcare team principles, medical management expectations, medical equipment, and general pharmacologic and physiologic parameters will help healthcare simulation technology specialists (HSTSs) to create engaging scenarios to allow for more effective learning.
