Manicomiche: Madness, Language and the Dismantling of the Asylum in Gianni Celati’s Comiche

Abstract

This chapter suggests that Celati’s use of comedy in Comiche (1971), which reproduces through language the effects of slapstick films, enables Celati to criticize the asylum. Through the employment of original literary strategies, the author lets aspects of the oppressive institution emerge. The chapter demonstrates how Celati was involved in the debate on mental health in the 1970s, with direct contact with one of the main protagonists of Italian radical psychiatry: Franco Basaglia. This contribution also argues that Comiche needs to be considered as Celati’s own contribution to the debate on mental health and thus read in the light of the wider criticism against oppressive institutions that characterizes all of his books of the 1970s.
