Abstract
The chapter studies African-Brazilian community participation in heritage activities in Southern Brazil. It starts by stating the introduction of community participation in heritage studies in the world. It then turns to the Brazilian context, Brazilian history and heritage in Brazil, ending up in introducing African-Brazilian issues in general and in Southern Brazil, especially. The chapter then turns to community participation actions in Southern Brazil, discussing how heritage can turn out to be empowering. It concludes by stressing how community participation may be a powerful tool for social diversity enhancement.
