Abstract

Atrial septal defects (ASDs) can be characterized as a hole somewhere in the atrial septum. The hole allows blood to flow between the left and right atria, resulting in pulmonary overcirculation in the case of low pulmonary vascular resistance (left-to-right shunt) or cyanosis in the case of high pulmonary vascular resistance (right-to-left shunt; Eisenmenger’s syndrome).
