Abstract
Imaging techniques have significantly developed in recent years. The rather relevant morphological image has evolved into a physiological and functional image capable of providing valuable additional information for a better understanding of disease processes.

Athanasiou A, Tardivon A, Tanter M, et al. Breast lesions: quantitative elastography with supersonic shear imaging - preliminary results. Radiology. 2010;256(1):297–303. Forty-eight were analyzed using conventional ultrasonography and shear wave elastography in lesions that had available histopathology. This quantitative technique provided quantitative measures of elasticity, adding complementary information that could potentially help in the characterization of breast lesion
Berg WA, Weinberg IN, Narayanan D, Lobrano ME, Ross E, Amodei L, et al. High-resolution fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography with compression (“positron emission mammography”) is highly accurate in depicting primary breast cancer. Breast J. 2006;12(4):309–23. In this study, we evaluated 94 women with known breast cancer or suspected breast lesions and performed PEM with intravenous injection of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). PEM demonstrated sensitivity for detection of cancer of 90%, specificity of 86%, positive predictive value of 88%, negative predictive value of 88% and accuracy of 88%
Brem RF, Floerke AC, Rapelyea JA, Teal C, Kelly T, Mathur V. Breast-specific gamma imaging as an adjunct imaging modality for the diagnosis of breast cancer. Radiology. 2008;247(3):651–7. This study retrospectively evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of BSGI scintimammography for the detection of breast cancer; 146 patients were evaluated, 167 lesions were submitted to biopsy, of which 83 were malignant. BSIG demonstrated high sensitivity (96.4%) and moderate specificity (59.5%) in detecting breast cancers

Breast Cancer Res. 2012;14(3):R94. The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of the diagnosis of dual-energy digital mammography with contrast when associated with mammography and ultrasonography with the precision of the diagnosis of mammography and ultrasonography alone. It was concluded that dual-energy digital mammography with contrast as a complement for mammography and ultrasonography improves diagnostic accuracy in relation to mammography and ultrasonography alone
Wallis M, Moa E, Zanca F, et al. Two-view and single-view tomosynthesis versus full-field digital mammography: high-resolution X-ray imaging observer study. Radiology. 2012;262(3):788–96. This study with 130 patients demonstrated a higher diagnostic accuracy of 2-position tomosynthesis than 2D digital mammography – mean area under the ROC curve (AUC = 0.772 for 2D, AUC = 0.851 for tomosynthesis)
