Abstract
This and the previous chapter look at the works that led up to the writing of Simmel’s final book The View of Life—both chapters look at Simmel as he pursued inspiration for developing his ideas and thinking. Continuing with the exploration of Simmel’s book on Rembrandt along with his other writings and letters, this chapter builds upon the previous chapter but focuses in more narrowly on how Simmel began to conceptualise life and its limits. This chapter looks very directly at what Simmel obtained from Rembrandt and how this developed and shaped his thinking.
