Abstract

Patellectomy is advised as the last resort of treatment for patellofemoral joint problems, always when other surgical techniques have been carried out or are not suitable to treat the case. As a consequence of the changes in knee biomechanics after patellectomy, menisci and cruciate ligaments are also in risk of injury. Trochlear cartilage is also more exposed to direct injuries, and tibiofemoral osteoarthritis is accelerated. In this chapter, the technique and results of patellectomy are described.
