Abstract

This paper describes a series of projects conducted in the Bicocca district, the location of Milano-Bicocca university, with a view to disseminating and promoting the neighbourhood’s heritage. The starting point of this programme was an exhibition on the work of Vittorio Gregotti, entitled “Gregotti e Associati 1953_2017”, which was held in Milan at the PAC- Pavillion of Contemporary Art (a contemporary art museum) from December 2017 to February 2018: the exhibition inspired reflection on the Bicocca neighborhood, which in turn informed the design of new participatory initiatives with a digital component.

This paper reflects the joint thinking of the two authors, but the writing up was divided between them as follows: Abstract, Sect. 1 and Conclusions were written by Franca Zuccoli, and Sects. 2 and 3 by Alessandra De Nicola.

Notes

  1. 1.

That the university students have failed to bond with the area is confirmed by the fact that they typically do not attend cultural events there, although they can avail of student discounts at leading cultural venues (including for example, Pirelli HangarBicocca and Teatro degli Arcimboldi). This is borne out by surveys conducted by the various venues over the years.

  2. 2.

Nota bene: the design of the themed walks was shared and agreed with the Pirelli Foundation, owners of the building from which the walks set out. Our grateful thanks go to Laura Riboldi and Martina De Petris of the Foundation.
