Abstract

This chapter considers acting, performance, marketing, and varied network programming around the Sky miniseries Faccia d’angelo (Angel Face, Andrea Porporati, 2012), which offers a melodramatic take on gangster Felice Maniero and the criminal organization the Venetian Mala del Brenta. It addresses Maniero’s mythologization as a prototypical small screen criminal antihero who loves, suffers loss, has a powerful emotional bond with his mother, and intimate ties with his fellow gang members. This chapter also considers how Faccia d’angelo dialogues with controversies surrounding Romanzo criminale: le serie and Michele Placido’s biopic Vallanzascagli angeli del male (Vallanzasca, 2010), all of which angered stakeholders who objected to glamorous depictions of criminals.
