Abstract
If, by 1895, sociologie seemed to be a French science, likewise by 1920 social anthropology seemed to be a British specialty. The new, most exciting developments of the social scientific disciplines came from Britain now. The French looked up at them and, surprisingly, the sociologues saw eye to eye with the British social anthropologists with whom they felt much less competition, namely with Malinowski and Radcliffe-Brown, than with the fledging sociologists. Both sciences can be understood as two dissimilar attempts at dealing with the same concern for the preservation of society, either in the context of a Republic (in France) or in that of an Empire (in Britain).
