Abstract

In the interwar years, a first version of British sociology emerged at Leplay House (later called the Institute of Sociology) around the Geddesian-Branford school of thought. The latter was also called the ‘Regional Survey Movement’ for its focus on geography, mapping and urban planning. This school was seen as an ally by Marcel Mauss, Durkheim’s nephew, of which some unpublished correspondence was found in the archives. It shows the alliance with the British was crucial financially and intellectually for the French. But the so-called ‘amateur’ Institute was eventually sidelined by a succession of dishonest Oxbridge presidents, despite making notable advances in the sociological discipline thanks to the Sociological Review journal.
