Primary Care Mental Health in Older People

Abstract

Families play a significant role in the care of older adults. Some of these family carers are older adults themselves and have their own healthcare needs. This ‘informal care’ is usually provided 24 h a day and often goes unnoticed and can have detrimental effects on the mental and physical health of family carers. Health and social care services need to be mindful of this and put systems in place to support family carers. The cases presented here highlight the need for primary care services to work with other stakeholders providing health and social care services, including families in order to provide holistic care for older adults.
