Imaging Diagnosis of Nerve Entrapments in the Shoulder

Abstract

Neuropathies are a potential source of shoulder pain and may result from trauma, neoplasia, infection, neuropathy, autoimmune disease, and iatrogenic conditions. Entrapment neuropathies of the shoulder are also an important potential cause of pain; however they are likely underestimated. Commonly affected nerves in the shoulder include the suprascapular, axillary, long thoracic, cervical accessory, and dorsal scapular nerves. This chapter provides a review of anatomic structures and landmarks of relevant nerves around the shoulder and will outline pathologic conditions causing entrapment neuropathies such as compression, stretching, or iatrogenic lesions. Further, the role of several diagnostic imaging modalities is discussed. Familiarity with nerve abnormalities about the shoulder and their imaging findings should allow for a more comprehensive evaluation of painful syndromes and appropriate clinical or surgical management.
