Exploring the Future of Nairobi National Park in a Changing Climate and Urban Growth

Abstract

Nairobi National Park (NNP) is increasingly suffering from the impacts of urbanization. The unprecedented growth of satellite towns around NNP has encroached on wildlife dispersal routes causing diminished grazing and habitat areas for wildlife. This chapter assesses historical urban growth patterns, historical seasonal rainfall trends, and gives an outlook of future rainfall changes for Nairobi. Historical seasonal rainfall over Nairobi is found to be highly variable with the period 2000–2017 implying increased intraseasonal rainfall variability. Projections for rainfall indicate an increasing rainfall, and rapid population growth in Nairobi and significant encroachment into the NNP and its adjacent wildlife dispersal areas are also recorded. Recommendations for policy makers, implementers, and consumers are made to inform NNP’s survival and prosperity.
