Abstract
Patients with intellectual disability (ID) are not immune to suffering from the trauma- and stressor-related disorders. These disorders are unique in their diagnostic requirement to identify exposure to stressful, traumatic, or unusual events as part of the etiology of the symptoms. For those with ID, the trauma must be defined by the individual and may include everyday events such as feeling isolated or marginalized. This chapter will describe the factors implicated in these disorders, the keys to evaluation, and the treatments for trauma- and stress-related disorders for patients with ID.
