Abstract

The concluding chapter discusses general issues of rural areas based on the insights gained from the various chapters and further literature. It uses the idea of functions or roles of the rural space as starting point and reflects on them with a view of recognizing the perspective of rural areas. Their future seems assured, particularly when one considers that rural areas are in fact multifunctional and offer a wide range of possibilities. Certainly, they are no longer a romantic space but must tackle the challenge of globalization.
