Postpartum Neuropathy

Abstract

Obstetrical nerve injuries due to compression or stretching of a vulnerable nerve occurs in 1% of deliveries. The most common lower extremity nerve injuries associated with pregnancy and delivery involve in descending order, the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, femoral nerve, peroneal nerve, lumbosacral plexus, sciatic nerve and obturator nerve. This chapter will review the various clinical presentations of obstetrical nerve injuries and will then discuss how to distinguish these relatively benign injuries from more serious complications such as retroperitoneal hematoma, epidural hematoma, and conus and cauda equine injuries.
