Abstract

Bourget examines the two terms that are at the heart of the debate about Muslims’ assimilation in French society: communautarisme and intégration. In the French context, communautarisme carries a negative connotation, because it is deemed as incompatible with the values of universalism promoted by the French model of the nation. Intégration is the goal that the nation fosters for all immigrants and their descendants, but one that Muslim minorities who claim their identity are faulted for eluding. Elements of this debate have been playing out on public schools grounds through cases such as the headscarf affair. Bourget recapitulates findings that show the diversity and the integration of the majority of Muslims in France, and the discrimination and accusations of double talk they face.
