Abstract

Eugenics’ public outcry after the Second World War did not stop the Greeks to establish the Hellenic Eugenics Society (HES) in 1953. Its members, all of them well-educated and famous physicians and professionals, developed networks with other scientific societies and the political elite of the country. The chapter shows that, in the light of the demographical problems, they found themselves responsible for educating young women and couples about marriage and reproduction. Being very thoughtful of their activities, the members of the HES ensured three important preconditions: firstly, to distance themselves from Nazi eugenics; secondly, to be in good terms with the state and religious authorities; and thirdly, to disseminate eugenics both to educated and non-educated people.
