Netanyahu’s Occupation Policy and the Israel–Palestine War

  • Chapter
  • First Online:

Abstract

After the death of Arafat, the power in the Palestinian Authority was passed to Mahmud Abbas, a much less charismatic and effective leader. In 2006, he therefore lost the election to Hamas, and after clashes between Fatah and Hamas in Gaza, the Palestinian Authority saw its jurisdiction reduced to the West Bank. Netanyahu, meanwhile, went full speed ahead with the expansion of Jewish settlements. His timid overtures to a Palestinian State were but empty rhetoric. His real strategy was to increase the Jewish population in Israel and the occupied territories to make any Palestinian State unfeasible. When Hamas and the Palestinian sought reconciliation in 2014, this was something Netanyahu could not accept. He would take the first valid excuse to invade Gaza and break Hamas. And so he did, unleashing Operation Protective Edge and destroying what was left of Gaza’s infrastructure.
