Abstract

In this chapter I describe Mary’s story, beginning in the FLDS community of Colorado City/Short Creek and describing the life events that led to her exodus from polygamy. Prioritizing Mary’s voice, I describe Mary’s life, highlighting key events that contributed to her readiness for higher education. Exploration of her life story indicated that while Mary’s work experience provided rich experience that positively contributed to higher education success, she needed more academic experience before she would have the academic background needed for success in a higher education setting.

Notes

  1. 1.

Mary referred to this as being “asked out”. Warren Jeffs began excommunicating men from the church and therefore church-owned land, as he gained power after the death of his father and Prophet Rulon Jeffs. This meant that men who were asked to leave the church often also had to leave their homes and families.
