Abstract

In this chapter I describe Emma’s life story, beginning with her childhood in the FLDS community in Colorado City/Short Creek. Prioritizing Emma’s voice, I describe her life, highlighting her experiences that relate to her readiness for higher education. Emma’s descriptions of formal education experiences, perceptions of a need for education, non-academic experiences that contributed to readiness for higher education settings, and independent self-concept indicated her readiness for higher education.

Notes

  1. 1.

Being “turned in” to the prophet was how the FLDS community referred to the process of fathers asking the prophet to select a husband for their daughter.
