Abstract

Using diary entries from several crew members, this chapter summarizes the first momentous events on the Antarctic continent, including Amundsen’s first sledge ride, a planned noble event that devolves into a fiasco; a reconfiguration of dog harnesses from Alaska style (two by two) to Greenland style (fan formation) so as to improve the dogs’ performance; successful sledge rides to transport supplies from the ship to the camp; a temporary home for the adult dogs on the Antarctic ice; the construction of the new house “Framheim” for the men; large dog tents erected for the dog teams; and the transfer of the puppies from the ship to the Framheim camp.
