    Limitations: The index may be affected by many factors, including geographical ones. Because it is based on relative shares, a strong regional orientation may be of little economic significance.

    Per capita income is the proxy of level of economic development (Markusen 2013).

  3. 3.

    In original version of Tinbergen (1962), the model is expressed in a log-log form. So the parameters are elasticity of the trade flow with respect to the explanatory variables.

    This study considers fully matched data only.
