Abstract
In Nigerian, the word strike is an experience, an eyewitness very common and witnessed by citizens and foreigners in our nation’s development and industrial relations as prevalent. In fact, from the advent of our democratic dispensation in the 90’s, no government has passed without industrial conflict, manifestations, resolved or left unresolved to the next regime. Strikes have a great negative impact on our economy. This paper was undertaken with a view to studying the cause of incessant strikes and problems of industrial relations in Nigeria to reduce its occurrence or avoidance, to embrace industrial harmony in the country. The study used primary and secondary research methods, with designed structured questionnaires distributed to Trade unions members, managers and workers in Ekiti and Ondo State. Out of 250 questionnaires distributed, 200 were positively retrieved and analyzed. We used the frequency percentage design analysis and Chi-Square design to test the hypothesis. findings revealed that there is a need for fundamental restructuring of the industrial relations system in Nigeria, it is important that government and employers of labor should respect and encourage collective bargaining that will lead to an industry-wide agreement in the country. The employers of labors, workers, unions and the government must develop a sense of respect, dignity and a culture of collaboration and partnership as members united in the development of work and the economy at large. The recommendation from this study can be adopted by the federal government of Nigeria and their labor union to ensure industrial harmony.
