Abstract
This case involves Christopher, a 19-year-old male with a history of severe alcohol use disorder, who is seeking increased independence in his care. Adolescence and young adulthood are periods marked by the achievement of several developmental milestones which include emancipation from parents and medical decision-making. Parental involvement is often a protective factor in the treatment of adolescents and young adults with substance use disorders. As such, for providers and family members, respecting patient autonomy and confidentiality may be challenging, especially in the early stages of young person’s recovery.
