Abstract

Colorectal surgeons must be familiar with the diagnosis and management of sexually transmitted infections, as their symptoms overlap with common colorectal diseases such as fissure, hemorrhoid, cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease. Eliciting a complete sexual history is paramount, as is maintaining a high level of suspicion for these infections. Empiric treatment is generally recommended, especially for symptomatic patients. Management of sexually transmitted infections requires not only prescribing the recommended medical therapy but also ensuring that sexual partners are notified, counseling patients to reduce their risk of transmission and reinfection, and notifying health departments of new cases and treatment failures.
