Abstract

This chapter is a description of the four members of the Danish String Quartet, Frederik Ø, Rune, Asbjørn, and Fredrik vis-à-vis their focus and kind of awareness in practicing and performing. It gives an overview of their general performance gestalt as well as of those more unusual experiences of altered self-awareness that I label “intense” forms of absorption.

Notes

  1. 1.

The Giaconna, is one of Bach’s most appreciated and challenging movements of the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin. As a very long and slow solo piece consisting of many variations over the same theme, it is fragile and technically demanding and thus requires a very strong musical concentration to play coherently and beautifully. See for instance Gidon Kremer’s performance on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBJPVnJ8m-Y.

  2. 2.

See performed by the DSQ here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UweeSVQ7t6A.

  3. 3.

The transcription here is ambiguous and should be understood as follows: In “the zone ”, Asbjørn becomes “conscious of things” as standing out to him, open to “disinterested ”, “neutral” registration. When not “in the zone ”, he is more immersed “a part of the set-up” or “a part of the whole thing”.

  4. 4.

    A famous Danish novelist.
