Abstract

The importance of volunteering has long been acknowledged by the EU. Humanitarian aid volunteering in the EU is regulated by Regulation (EU) 375/2014 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 3 April 2014, which established the European Voluntary Humanitarian Aid Corps. Most international literature on the subject tends to analyse the role of voluntary activity based on its contribution to social or economic life; the European Commission considers employee volunteering to be an expression of corporate social responsibility. There have been multiple political initiatives, recommendations and approvals from EU institutions that have been adopted to recognise and validate continuous informal and non-formal learning; these initiatives, recommendations and approvals recognise volunteering as an activity of both formal and informal learning.
