Abstract

Although the sports sector has only been included among the EU competences since the Lisbon Treaty (2009), the Court of Justice had previously identified a number of rights and obligations that apply to sports activities when they exhibit an economic dimension. The European case law has, thus, contributed to the definition of the status of a sportsperson and has curtailed the ‘special nature’ of the sports system in three crucial areas: freedom of movement, freedom of competition and judicial protection.
