Abstract

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and senile dementia of the Alzheimer’s type, a distinction based primarily on age of onset, appear to be a similar, if not the same, disease process. It is now apparent that AD accounts for 40% to 60% of all cases of dementia with onset in adulthood and is two to threefold more frequent than multi-infarct dementia. It is estimated that 3–5% of individuals over the age of 65 suffer from AD, and current costs for nursing home care in the United States for patients afflicted with AD exceed $10 billion per year.
