Abstract
SAYTAN is a computer-programmed tangent formula for phase determination, employed in a multi-trial approach in the MULTAN tradition. It has been described in two publications by Debaerdemaeker, Tate & Woolfson (1985, 1988). In the first of these papers it was called the “Sayre Tangent Formula”, but a referee for the second paper pointed out that Sayre did not have a tangent formula and so, since then, we use the more appropriate description “Sayre-equation Tangent Formula”.
