Abstract
Growing interest in behavioral medicine has focused attention on the function and control of the cardiovascular system, partly because of its involuntary responsiveness to emotional and stressful situations. The external manifestations of cardiovascular responses provide objective indications of the changing psychological status of normal subjects and patients. An expanding array of noninvasive techniques open opportunities for new and exciting research regarding the potential roles of psychological and behavioral factors in the development of dysfunction and disease. Current concepts of cardiovascular psychophysiology have been presented in a comprehensive overview edited by Obrist (1981).
