Abstract
The evaluation of sulfur-containing amino acids in urine is of interest in cystinuric subjects since the abnormally-high excretion of cystine, a disulfur amino acid, is responsible for the disease. Furthermore, sulfur drugs such as d-penicillamine (PEN) and 2-mercapto-propionyl-glycine (MPG) are often used in the treatment of cystinuric patients on the basis of a thiol-exchange reaction. Some of the resulting compounds appear in urine and their identification is necessary for a full comprehension of urine chromatograms. This study was designed to identify and determine such compounds in the urine of normal subjects and cystine stone patients.
