Taste Reception in the Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops Truncatus Gilli) and the California Sea Lion (Zalophus Californianus)

Sensory Abilities of Cetaceans

Abstract

The literature contains relatively scant information on marine mammals’ abilities to taste. Kuznetsov (1974), Lowell and Flanigan (1980) and Nachtigall (1986) reviewed research on marine mammal taste reception. Kuznetsov (1978) reports that Black Sea bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) can distinguish acidic (sour), bitter, and salty substances but the Tursiops were “sensitive only to bitter stimuli” (Kuznetsov, 1974, p. 177). Kuznetsov’s work is discussed in Nachtigall’s 1986 review.
