Abstract
Infertility is seldom eradicated in a few months. Indeed, its current definition by medical professionals requires that the couple has been trying to conceive for one year without success prior to medical intervention. During the initial diagnosis and treatment, the couple may maintain a determined problem-solving approach, along with undaunted optimism. However, years of extended treatment and repeated failures characterize the experiences of many infertile individuals. During this time, they may confront a variety of thoughts and feelings such as anger, frustration, and despair. It is the goal of this chapter to outline the processes involved in coming to terms with such an infertility experience and the impact that it has on one’s self-concept, one’s goals, and one’s life.
