Abstract

In the preceding chapters we have advanced a number of relatively nontraditional thoughts about existing approaches to understanding and practicing psychotherapy. We have questioned their adequacy and their appropriateness as frameworks for providing people a better understanding of important aspects of their lives and problems. In doing so we have ventured beyond existing bodies of therapeutic literature. In part we have done so because we believe existing therapeutic approaches and the research about them have for the most part ignored some of the issues that we consider to be central to understanding, conducting, and gaining from psychotherapy.
