Abstract
There are certain controversial issues in police work that have generated some research and much discussion. This chapter seeks to examine these issues from a psychodynamic slant in the hope of providing another perspective to complement the existing sociological descriptions. What follows is an attempt to look at police stress, the stereotype of the dumb cop, the police personality, corruption, and brutality with an eye on unconscious motivation, conflict, and defense. The goal is to gain a better understanding of the impact of unconscious thoughts and feelings on the police officer’s behavior in these various situations.
