In Vitro Cultivation of Giardia Trophozoites

  • Chapter
Giardia and Giardiasis

Abstract

For more than half a century, methods and media have been available that enable the in vitro cultivation of most human intestinal protozoan parasites, including Entamoeba histolytica, other amoeba, Balantidium coli, and most of the alimentary flagellates (Dobell and Laidlaw, 1926). Despite early optimistic reports, reproducible methods for the long-term cultivation of Giardia from humans did not become available until the 1960s. The genus Giardia thus may contain both the first intestinal protozoan parasite to be recognized, and the last common member of this group to yield to in vitro culture.
