Abstract
The only important early description of the cephalic arterial system in mammals is that of Tandler (1899), which has been referred to in most of the subsequent literature. Tandler found no specific connection between the cephalic arterial pattern and the systematic position of the species he investigated. Recently, however, in connection with a comprehensive comparative anatomical investigation of the carotid arterial pattern in many mammalian orders, it has been found that the pattern of carotid circulation may serve as a character complex of taxonomic importance. Some studies have involved insectivores and primates (Bugge, 1972, 1974b), carnivores (Bugge, 1978), and edentates and pangolins (Bugge, 1979), but most have concerned the order Rodentia (Guthrie, 1963; Bugge, 1970, 1971a, b, c, 1974a, b).
