Abstract
In Section 1 three utilizations of vocabulary counts were summarized: structuring the vocabulary of schoolbooks, building efficiency into a system of shorthand, and engineering a telephone circuit to fit the spectra of speech. Subsequent interests lay primarily in matters of speech perception and the statistics of language.
