Abstract
With much of their research focused on mundane behavior, social and personality psychologists often borrow terms from everyday language, such as attitude, trait, aggression, and consciousness. Unfortunately, we are often remiss in explicitly defining our specialized uses of these ordinary sorts of words, especially in the early stages of research on a topic. And, even when writers clearly define their terms, they often adopt different connotations of the everyday definitions. Only after realizing that the multiplicity of implicit and explicit definitions has led to confusion and miscommunication have researchers typically paused to address conceptual issues.
