Abstract

The infant and preschool-age years, from birth through 4 years of age, are crucial in the life of the individual. It is during this period that the neonate makes the adjustment from a sharply limited intrauterine environment, in which all stimuli are mediated through the maternal biological system, to the rich, varied, and often hostile, extrauterine world, in which the regulalory responses are direct functions of interactions between this new environment and the infant’s or child’s biological system.
