Abstract
The preceding chapters of this book have looked at a number of national efforts, past and recent, to come to grips with adult illiteracy. Illiteracy has not, however, been a solely national concern; nor has literacy work been an exclusively national enterprise. Since the end of World War Two, for example, many international nongovernmental organizations have been active in this area, as have a number of bilateral government-to-government programs of aid and cooperation.
