Abstract

In service, plastics and their corresponding composites are exposed to an environment in which the moisture and temperature vary in a prescribed manner. This combined change of moisture and temperature, which is known as the hygrothermal effect can be more damaging to the mechanical properties of the composites than to either of their constituent materials. The studies on the hygrothermal ageing of fibre reinforced plastics have been extensively reviewed by Springer (1982).
